An American artist must decide whether to overstay her visa or give up her chance to become a U.K. citizen.

A Guatemalan graduate must decide whether to make the dangerous trek to America.

As their parallel stories intertwine, two young women discover how far they’ll go to get what they need, and who they’ll hurt by becoming illegal.

A vibrant narrative poem woven with gripping drama that depicts two contemporary immigration struggles. Featuring music by multi-instrumentalist and regular in the Glasgow music scene Simon Liddell, 2018 saw his first venture into theatre; collaborating with Gary McNair on McGonagall’s Chronicles, before scoring After the Cuts and Square Go.

ILLEGAL explores Jessica Phillippi’s own eight-year frustration with the immigration process. Moving from America to Scotland and training at Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow, Phillippi co-founded Scandal Theatre where she creates political work about international social injustices.

ILLEGAL is a co-production between Scandal Theatre and RiotBox Productions, debuting at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2019.
